Part of the guide: Muay Thai in Great Yarmouth: the complete guide
Martial arts can help children build confidence, discipline and fitness. Union Thai runs kids classes for families in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston-on-Sea. This guide is for parents. It covers what children get from training and what to ask before you book.
What do kids learn in martial arts classes?
Kids learn discipline, respect and confidence. They also get fitter and learn new skills.
Fitness is the obvious gain. Children move, jump, skip and work hard. It is a good way to burn energy.
The bigger gains are quieter. Children learn to listen. They learn to wait their turn. They learn to try again when something is hard. Those habits come from showing up and doing the work.
Do kids train separately from adults?
Yes. Children train in their own sessions. They are not thrown in with the adult classes.
This lets the coaches pitch each session at the right level. Children learn at their own speed and with kids of a similar level. Ask about junior sessions on the contact page.
Is martial arts safe for kids?
Kids classes at Union Thai are supervised, and the aim is for them to be safe and fun.
Every sport carries some risk. If you have a worry about your child, tell the coach before the first session. Use the contact page if you would like to ask first. We would rather know, so we can look after your child properly.
Is my child ready to start martial arts?
Most children who want to try it are ready enough. They do not need to be fit or sporty.
Shy children can do well, because the structure helps. Energetic children can do well, because they get to use all that energy. The best test is simple. Ask your child if they want to try. Then book a session and see how it feels. You can decide after that.
What age can my child start?
Contact us with your child's age and we will point you to the right session. Kids have their own classes. Ask about junior sessions on the contact page.
We do not list age bands in this guide, because we want to give you the right answer for your child. Use the contact page to ask.
What should my child wear and bring?
Ask us before the first session. In general, comfortable clothes and water are the basics.
We will look after the rest. You do not need to buy anything first. Please arrive a few minutes early so your child can meet the coach and settle in.
How can I help my child get the most from classes?
Turn up regularly. Progress comes from showing up, not from one big session.
Praise effort, not just results. Children who feel safe to try and fail tend to keep going. Talk about class on the way home. Ask what they learned. Ask what was hard. Let them carry their own bag and get ready themselves. Small jobs build a sense of ownership.
Be patient at the start. Some children take a few sessions to settle. That is normal. If you are unsure, talk to the coach.
Can parents train too?
Yes. Union Thai teaches Muay Thai, MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for adults, and the monthly membership covers kids and adults.
Some parents find it easier to try something new when their child is already training. See the memberships page for the options.
How do I book a kids class in Great Yarmouth?
