Part of the guide: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Norfolk: the complete guide
Group classes are the heart of Union Thai. Some people also want private time with a coach. This guide explains who 1-to-1 coaching suits and how to ask for it. For details such as rates, we point you to the coaches page, because we do not want to guess.
What is 1-to-1 martial arts coaching?
It is a session with a coach, just for you. The coach focuses on your goals and your level.
In a group, a coach has to look after many people. In 1-to-1, the whole session is yours. You get feedback on each move and you can ask as many questions as you like.
Who is 1-to-1 coaching for?
It suits people who want faster progress, people who feel nervous about a group and people with a specific goal.
Some people use it before they join a class. Some use it alongside group training. Some want to work on one skill. If you are not sure, contact us and ask.
What can I work on?
It depends on you and on the coach. You could work on striking, on the ground or on general fitness. Tell us what you want when you ask.
Our coaches bring different strengths. Marcos Lopes has over 40 years of experience in Muay Thai and also coaches BJJ, boxing and MMA. Joao Lopes has 15 years in boxing and kickboxing. Tye Riches is a K1 and Muay Thai champion. Brett Semtex is a multi-title K1 champion. Read about them on the coaches page.
Is 1-to-1 better than a group class?
Not better. Different. Group classes give you training partners and a community. 1-to-1 gives you focus.
Many people do both. The group builds fitness and pressure. The private session fixes details. Neither replaces the other.
How do I prepare?
Think about what you want. Do you want to learn the basics, fix a habit or work on a goal? Write it down.
Wear comfortable clothes and bring water. Tell the coach about any injuries. Be ready to ask questions.
What does it cost?
See the 1-to-1 section of the coaches page for the current details. We do not list a rate in this guide, because we do not want to give you out-of-date information.
If anything is unclear, use the contact page.
How do I book a 1-to-1?
Use the Book a 1-to-1 button near the bottom of any page. It takes you to the coaches page.
You can also use the contact page to ask a question first. If you want to try a group class as well, check the timetable.
What if I am a complete beginner?
That is fine. A 1-to-1 session can be a gentle start. The coach goes at your pace and explains everything.
Many beginners find it easier to join a group class after a private session. They know the basics and they feel less nervous.
How often should I book a 1-to-1?
It depends on your goal and your budget. Some people book one session to fix a single problem. Others book regularly alongside group classes.
Start with one session and see how it feels. Then talk to the coach about what makes sense. Do not feel pushed. It is your decision.
What if I already train?
Then 1-to-1 can help you fix details. A coach can watch your form up close and tell you what to change.
Tell us what you train and what you want to improve. That helps the coach plan the session around you.
